Trekking gorillas in Uganda

Uganda Travel Guide

Travelling in Uganda

  • What will we eat on your trips in Uganda?

When camping, the food we provide is, quite frankly, delicious. Breakfasts will consist of cooked options such as meats, toast, porridge, eggs and beans and there will be a selection of fruits, avocado, yoghurt and cereals. Lunches typically start with a hearty sandwich followed by fresh fruit or pancakes and syrup. Evening meals will have three courses. Starting with soup, then a substantial main meal with plenty of protein and carbohydrates (e.g. steak, mashed potato and vegetables / chicken or lentil curry and rice). Typical deserts will be banana fritters, pancakes, rice pudding and sultanas.

When you are staying at hotels or lodges on safari, there is a wide selection available on the menus and you can choose anything you like. Your guide will sometimes pre-order meals for a specific time as meals are all made fresh and some dishes can take longer than others.
  • Who cooks our food?

When camping, your guides will cook for you. They are all trained chefs and have plenty of experience of catering for groups of all sizes and dietary requirements.

Meals at hotels and lodges will be cooked in their kitchens by their chefs.
  • Can you cater for dietary requirements?

Yes! Our team in Uganda can cater for pretty much all dietary requirements but you should let us know in plenty of time before you travel so that they can be fully prepared and source all necessary ingredients.
  • Do you offer a shorter Gorilla Trekking trip?

We do! We appreciate that not everyone has 12 days available to do our full Gorilla Trekking trip and have a 6 day itinerary that may be more suitable. This is only available as a private trip.
  • Can I visit the gorillas after climbing Mount Stanley?

Of course! Let us know what you are planning and we can put an itinerary together for you. Typically, this would be a 6 day extension and you would travel straight to Bwindi Impenetrable after leaving the Ishasha region. This is available as a private extension only.
  • Is it possible to upgrade the accommodation on my trip?

On open group trips, all of the group will stay at the same accommodation and we cannot offer any upgrades. However, if you are booking a private trip, there are plenty of options. Just let us know what you are looking for.
  • Is there a minimum age for gorilla trekking?

Yes. The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15. Our open group trips have a minimum age of 16. If you are planning a private trip with children who are under 15, it may be possible for them to visit the gorillas but an exemption letter signed by a parent / guardian will be required and this can take a while to be approved by the authorities so we strongly recommend planning your trip plenty of time before you travel. Anyone under the age of 18 (on open group or private trips) must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times.
