Look at any map and find Europe. Identify the long thin countries of Norway, Sweden and Finland pointing downwards from the north of the continent towards mainland Europe. Now let your eyes travel north, north and more north and you’ll see Svalbard. A kingdom of Norway, technically an archipelago and often referred to as Spitzbergen or Spitsbergen, Svalbard Norway is one of the most northern populated places on earth.

This incredible Arctic Archipelago is over 60% covered in ice and is made up of 9 main islands. It is just over 800 miles from here to the North Pole and situated within the Arctic Circle. As such, it is a fantastic place to spot the aurora borealis or the Northern Lights and experience the beautiful midnight sun. The sun doesn’t set in Svalbard during the summer for almost 5 months and doesn’t rise for 3 months during the winter. Svalbard is truly a place of extremes.

With over 2000 glaciers and 7 national parks, Svalbard is an excellent place for arctic adventures.
