Jordan is a fascinating middle eastern country technically
located within the continent of Asia. Where the Red Sea separates Egypt in
Africa with western Asia, Jordan sits at the crossroads where Africa, Asia and
Europe meet. The Kingdom of Jordan shares a border with Israel to the east,
Saudi Arabia to the south, Iraq to the east and Syria to the north and despite
recent events suffered by their neighbours, remains a welcoming and exciting
country to visit.
Much of the population of Jordan is located in the northwest
of the country, including the capital city, Amman. Closer to the Mediterranean the
climate is moderate, whilst further east and south the landscape is much drier
and more arid. Jordan was named after the River Jordan which separates Jordan
from Israel and flows into the landlocked Dead Sea.
The Dead Sea is a vast salt lake in the Jordan Rift Valley
separating Jordan and Israel, and its shores are over 400m below sea level. The
salinity of the lake is the reason for its name as there isn’t much plant or
animal life that can tolerate such a high salt concentration. For the same
reason, visitors have flocked to the Dead Sea for thousands of years to benefit
from its unique health properties and mineral rich salts.
