Guyana Travel Guide

Travel in Guyana

  • Is it safe to visit Guyana?

As with travel anywhere in the world, we recommend taking sensible precautions such as keeping your valuables close at hand and somewhere safe. Some parts of Guyana are not as safe as others and we recommend doing your research on where you should and shouldn't go. On all Kandoo trips, you will have a highly experienced local guide who will be with you for the duration of your trip.
  • Where do I fly into for your trips in Guyana?

For all of our trips in Guyana, you will need to fly into Cheddi Jagan Airport (GEO). On your arrival, we will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel in Georgetown.
  • What is there to do in Georgetown?

Georgetown is Guyana's vibrant capital city and showcases a mix of colonial-era architecture, traditional wooden buildings and tropical plants and wildlife.

In the bustling hub of the city, you will find St George's Cathedral which, at 143 feet in height, is one of the world's tallest wooden buildings. Visiting the Stabroek Market is a must if you want to experience local life and pick up some local produce and spices. At the 1793 Monument, you can learn about Cuffy, a rebelious enslaved person and Guyanan hero. The Walter Roth Museum of Anthropology showcases Guyana's indigenous history.

If it is nature and wildlife you are after, we highly recommend spending time in the Georgetown National Park and also the Botanical Gardens. If you have time, you can take a stroll along Georgetown Seawall and a sunset riverboat cruise.

Trekking in Guyana

  • What is it like hiking in Guyana?

Guyana is a relatively undiscovered part of the world which means that you will be treading where few have walked before you. This means that many of the hiking trails may feel remote or off the beaten track simply due to the small number of people who use them. Hiking in the jungle will be hot and humid and you should consider wearing loose, comfortable clothing.
  • What should I wear to hike in Guyana?

Hiking in the forest will be hot and humid and we recommend wearing loose clothing that will be comfortable. You should also wear sturdy boots with ankle support and protect yourself from insect bites by wearing long trousers, long sleeves and tucking your trousers inside your socks. For all of our trips in Guyana, you will find full packing lists in the trip dossiers and in the trip information on our website.
  • Do I need insect repellent when hiking in Guyana?

Yes! There will be biting insects in the areas where you will be hiking and you should bring an insect repellent containing DEET. Whilst you shouldn't expect to be swarmed by insects, if you have one, we advise bringing an over the head mosquito net and you should cover up so there is less to tempt any insects that think you might be tasty. At night, when you are sleeping outside, you will be in hammocks which have mosquito nets attached. It will be dark and our team recommend bringing a headtorch that has a red light feature as this will attract less insects than the brighter white light.
