When to go? Seasons, climate, festivities

  • April to June

    Spring is a great time to visit Italy. In the north the conditions are perfect for trekking in the dolomites or the Alps and all over the country there are few tourists as the peak season has not yet arrived.
  • July to August

    Summer is peak season for tourists and thousands of visitors from all over the world will flock to Italy. The south of the country and costal areas will be hot but cooler climates can still be found in the north. If you are thinking of attempting to climb Gran Paradiso, this is a great time to go.
  • September to October

    The Autumn season is similar to the spring, there is less tourists around and the temperatures are moderate. This is a great time to go sight seeing in Rome or Naples but you should expect a bit of rain also.
  • November to May

    Over the winter the north of Italy will be cold and the mountainous areas covered in snow attracting skiers and snowboarders to the winter resorts. Many people visit Italy in the winter for shopping in the winter sales which start on new years day and run until mid February.

Holidays and festivities

  • Carnevale

    February
    Celebrated all over Italy but especially big in Venice. Expect music, dancing, costumes and elaborate parades.
  • Festa della Madonna Bruna

    July
    Held in the town of Matera each year this fabulous procession has a surprising ending and is followed by a spectacular firework display. Well worth a visit.
  • La Quintana

    August
    This is a medieval jousting tournament! Held in the town of Ascoli Piceno, visitors can witness the tournament as well as a procession of people in medieval finery and the festivities carry on well into the night.
