When to go? Seasons, climate, festivities

  • December to February

Despite the fact that it is typically snowy, the weather during this time is still relatively comfortable with temperatures only just dropping below freezing. Christmas is a huge deal and towns and cities are transformed into real winter wonderlands! The snows will start to fall in early December and can last through till late April in the higher resorts. This season is best for winter sport holidays as the mountain ski resorts such as Tsakhkadzor, bustle with people making the most of the lower temperatures. Expect temperatures between -7°C and 5°C .
  • March to May

In spring time the temperatures get much warmer but the snow will still remain for a little longer at higher elevations. This is a nice time for walking with the flowers starting to blossom in early March, coming into full bloom by late April and temperatures between 5°C and 20°C. By mid May the conditions are normally right to start the Transcaucasian Trail.
  • June to September

Summer time is peak season for trekking in Armenia. The snows have now melted away and the shaded pathways of the trail are perfect for escaping the midday sun. Temperatures are usually between 16°C and 28°C. The highest temperatures occur in August when there is also a greater possibility of rain as afternoon thunderstorms are common. September is the most reliable month with warm days and less rain.
  • October to November

This is the quiet time in Armenia with the summer season over and the winter ski season yet to begin. The temperature is dropping and there is a chance of cold winds, rain and even early snow. Expect day times to be between 5°C and 15°C. The autumn colours, particularly in the national parks, creating some striking views.
