Landscapes of Greenland during Summer

Greenland Travel Guide

Travelling to Greenland

  • How many days do you need in Greenland?

Greenland is only serviced by two international airlines and you can only reach the territory from either Iceland or Denmark. Since getting there is a little tricky, you may as well stay at least a week to make the most of it! Our adventures in Greenland are between 8 and 10 days.
  • Is Greenland expensive?

In a word...yes. Food, building materials, fuel, clothing (pretty much everything) comes from outside of Greenland which means that accommodation, shopping, eating out and transport in Greenland can be very expensive indeed. Joining a group tour with all your accommodation and meals included is the most cost effective way to experience Greenland.
  • Is Greenland dangerous?

Greenland is about as safe as a destination can be. The crime rate is extremely low and the chances of you experiencing any kind of petty theft are very slim.
  • Is English spoken in Greenland?

The official languages of Greenland are Greenlandic and Danish but English is also widely spoken.
  • When is the best time to visit Greenland?

The summer months of July and August are the best times to visit Greenland. At this time the weather is at its best and there are more flight options available.
  • What temperatures can I expect in Greenland?

During the summer months, temperatures generally stay above 0°C but may drop below. If you are taking part in one of our trips, you should check the recommended equipment list carefully to make sure you have appropriate clothing.
  • Is it easy to get to Greenland?

Travelling to Greenland can take a long time and internal flights in Greenland are frequently delayed because of bad weather. Unless you are taking a cruise, the only way to get to Greenland is to fly and there are only a handful of airlines that fly in and out of Greenland. Take some time looking at options as there may be more than one route available depending on where you are starting from and please ask our team if you need any advice.
  • What options are there for eating out in Ilulissat?

There are a number of restaurants offering a range of cuisines including Asian and Italian. Be aware that the latest these tend to stay open until is 9pm. You may also find small stalls offering fish and chips (yes, really!). With cod caught freshly that day, they really will be the best you have ever tasted! On our trips, bedrooms come kitted out with a small kitchenette and, if you prefer, you can purchase food to cook from one of the three supermarkets in town and make your own food.

Kayaking in Greenland

  • Can you go Kayaking in Greenland?

Yes! During the summer months kayaking is probably the best way to explore Greenland. With all of your camping gear and food stored in the kayak, you can paddle past icebergs and whales as you reach otherwise inaccessible locations and wild camp in spectacular wilderness.
  • Is a kayak easy to capsize?

The two man sea kayaks we provide for our clients are extremely stable and difficult to flip over. Although some previous kayaking experience would be an advantage, your guide will provide you with all the training you need. Even if you have never paddled a boat before, you will be gliding through the water in no time.
  • Can you get trapped under a kayak?

The two person sea kayaks we provide on our trips are very stable and the chances of you flipping over are slim. In the highly unlikely event that you did flip over, it is very easy to slide your legs out of the boat and let your self float up to the surface.  We provide only the highest quality safety equipment that includes dry suits and buoyancy aids to keep you 100% safe at all times.
  • How far will I kayak each day?

You may kayak up to 20km in a day which is a long way. On our kayaking trips, you will be moving from camp to camp and this point to point journey really takes you away from the crowds. In the summer, there is daylight 24/7 so you don't need to be in a hurry to get anywhere.
