The European country of Iceland is northwest of Scotland, to the east of much larger Greenland and to the west of the Norway coast. This island nation sits along a volcanic ridge and has a vast interior plateau that is home to sandy lava fields, ancient glaciers, soaring mountains and stunning scenery. Despite its name, Iceland has a surprisingly temperate climate due in large part to the passing gulf stream even though it is on the cusp of the Arctic Circle, as well as the intense geothermal activity of the volcanoes below.
Although Iceland has mild summers, it is still known as the ‘land of ice and fire’ as in winter the sun barely reaches above the horizon, offering a golden hour instead where sunrise and sunset both happen within a short amount of time sending beautiful colours across the snow scattered landscapes. Winter is the best time to see the Northern Lights in Iceland due to the endless nights, but it is possible to see the aurora borealis all year round.
Hiking in Iceland is popular as this icy paradise can be cold, but not too cold, and there are regular flights into Reykjavik, the capital city of Iceland. Amongst the ice fields, glaciers and mountains are hidden hot springs, volcanic swimming pools, stunning fjords and crevasses and some of the most impressive waterfalls in the world.
