Ecuador Travel Guide

Peak climbs in Ecuador

  • What equipment is provided on your Peaks of Ecuador trip?

We have our own stock of equipment in Ecuador and the following items will be provided for you as part of the Peaks of Ecuador trip:

    • Ice Axe
    • Crampons
    • Climbing harness
    • 2 locking carabinas
    • Standard carabinas
    • Trekking poles
    • Sleeping bag
    • Climbing helmet
  • How do guides check that you are OK when climbing at altitude?

Each day, your guide will check your pulse and blood oxygen levels. Guides will record this information along with details of any headaches, nausea, loss of appetite and other symptoms of altitude related illness. If the guide feels that you are not fit to carry on climbing, you must descend. The guide's decision is final.
  • Is single occupancy available on peak climbs?

Single occupancy is available if camping and at hotels. On nights where you will be staying at a guesthouse or refuge, you will be staying in shared bunk rooms and single occupancy is not possible.

Travelling in Ecuador

  • Where do I fly into for your trips in Ecuador?

For all of our trips in Ecuador, you will need to fly into Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO) in Quito. You will find direct flights from Miami, Atlanta, Mexico, Bogota, Amsterdam and Madrid depending on where you are starting your journey from.
  • What is there to do in Quito?

If you have time to spare, it is well worth exploring the high-altitude capital city of Ecuador.

In the Old Town, you can visit the Seven Wonders of Quito and learn about the rich religious history of the city, take a walking tour to discover the colonial influences or take in the sunset from the hilltop statue of the Virgin of Panecillo.

The TeleferiQo Cable Car will take you up the side of the Pichincha Volcano and give you stunning panoramic views of the city and mountains close-by.

Take a stroll through La Ronda, one of the oldest streets in Quito lined with stalls and shops selling goods and food made by local artisans. If you are here in the evening, you will find a great selection of bars and restaurants.

  • Is it safe to visit Ecuador?

As with travel anywhere in the world, we recommend taking sensible precautions such as keeping your valuables close at hand and somewhere safe.  Some parts of Ecuador are not as safe as others and we recommend doing your research on where you should and shouldn't go. On all Kandoo trips, you will have a highly experienced local guide who will be with you for the duration of your trip.
