Plan your climb of Mount Toubkal

Kandoo's View

Jebel Toubkal is the highest peak in Morocco, the highest peak in northern Africa and the highest peak in the Arab world.  "Jebel" means mountain in the local Arabic dialect.  Standing at 4167m, its a tough climb but easily achievable by any fit walker with no technical climbing skills required.  At Kandoo Adventures we stay off the beaten track and approach the mountain from the east, crossing several high passes along the way to give you time to acclimatise and experience more of the stunning High Atlas range.  On route we will meet the local Berber people and wild camp in some incredible locations.

Please note that although the itinerary below is the one we intend to follow, there is still a chance that it may need to be changed in the event of heavy snow.  Even in the summer months low laying snow can make some of the trails too difficult for the mules to negotiate.  In these conditions we will follow an alternative route which approaches the mountain from the north. Your guide's main focus will be to ensure your safety and the success of the trip.

Detailed itinerary

1Arrive in Marrakesh

Arrive in Marrakesh and transfer to your hotel.  You will meet the other members of your group and have some time to relax. Depending on your arrival time there may be an opportunity to get out and explore the city a little.

  • Accommodation: 4 star Marrakesh hotel
  • Meals: Dinner
2Marrakesh to Tachedirt

Today we transfer from Marrakesh to Oukaimedem, the starting point of our hike where we meet our mule drivers, enjoy a picnic lunch and prepare our gear.  Our first objective is Tizi n’Eddi (2980m), a great warm up with panoramic views of Imane valley and the High Atlas summits from the top. We then descend to the village of Tachedirt, the highest village in the Atlas mountains, and set up camp at Fousaou (2300m), at the base of Tizi n’Likemt.

  • Ascent: 620m
  • Descent: 840m
  • Walking: 4 to 5 hours
  • Accommodation: Tent
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
3Tachedirt to Azib Likemt

After breakfast we start our accent of Tizi n’Likemt (3550m), from the pass we have incredible views to the south east, the perfect opportunity for some spectacular panoramic photos. We descend to the secluded village of Azib Likemt and continue to the foot of Tizi n’Ourai where we make camp for the night at 2900m.

  • Ascent: 1650m
  • Descent: 650m
  • Walking: 4 to 5 hours
  • Accommodation: Tent
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
4Tizi n'Ourai and Lac d'Ifni

Climbing up to the col of Tizi n’Ourai at 3109m, we have splendid views over the cultivated valley floor far below.  It is a tough decent today down to the village of Amsouzart at 1740m where we can stop for some well earned refreshment.  From there our path turns west and climbs up to the idyllic Lac d’Ifni at 2312m.  We will make our camp for the evening here on the lakeshore and, weather permitting, enjoy a swim surrounded by the towering Atlas peaks.

  • Ascent: 890m
  • Descent: 1540m
  • Walking: 5 to 6 hours
  • Accommodation: Tent
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
5Tizi n'Ouanoums

Today Toubkal will be towering over us as we navigate gorges and difficult paths up to Tizi n’Ouanoums (3600m).   This is easily the most dramatic and spectacular of all the High Atlas passes.  At the top we stand in between the two highest peaks in the range, Toubkal on one side and Ouanoukrim on the other.  From the col a short easy slope takes us down to the Nelter Refuge at 3200m Where we will set up camp.  This is the main basecamp for most Toubkal climbs and we will be able to look up at our route for the next day.

  • Ascent: 1350m
  • Descent: 580m
  • Walking: 5 to 6 hours
  • Accommodation: Tent
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
6Mount Toubkal

The big day!  We will leave before sunrise, climbing a steep rocky track up the mountain side to reach a hanging valley known as the South Cwm where huge boulders are scattered around the track.  We continue up steep scree slopes to hit the summit ridge at 3940m and follow the crest of the ridge to the summit pyramid at 4167m.  The sense of achievement as you stand atop the highest point in north Africa is enormous.  The deep valleys of the Atlas Mountains are all laid out below you and on a clear day the views extend all the way to Marrakesh.  Our decent route takes us down the north side of the mountain and we continue down the valley to the village of Aremd at 1900m.

  • Ascent: 967m
  • Descent: 2167m
  • Walking: 8 to 9 hours
  • Accommodation: Shelter
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
7Back to Marrakesh

We will arrive in late morning and check in to our hotel.  We then have a free day to soak up all the fascinating sights of the city. Difficulty

Difficulty Level 3/5 MODERATE

Daily Walking time: maximum 8 to 9 Hours

Daily Accent: maximum 1350m

An accent of Toubkal requires you to be in good physical condition and have some experience of walking for up to 6 hours a day for several days in a row.  The trail will vary from easy paths to very steep and rocky terrain.  There will be changes of altitude as you climb above 3000m to cross the mountain passes and descend again.  A good amount of endurance is necessary but mental stamina is the most important thing.

This programme does not require any technical climbing ability or experience but you should try to be in the best physical condition possible before departure.  You will be accompanied by a qualified Berber guide at all times as well as your cook and mule drivers.
