An excellent alternative to the Classic Inca trail.  If you're short on time but still fancy doing a little bit of trekking before hitting the highlights of Machu Picchu, then the Huchuy Qosqo trail is perfect for you.  With only 17km of trail and  a maximum altitude climbed of 4350m, it is ideal for those looking for an introductory trek in the Peruvian Andes.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1Arrive Cusco

The Kandoo team will meet you at Cuzco airport and transfer you to your pre-trek hotel. Later you will attend a pre-trek briefing with your Lead Guide to prepare you for the challenge ahead.

Day 2Free time in Cusco

The city of Cuzco sits at an altitude of 3400m and is a great place to acclimatise before you start your Huchuy Qosqo trek.  You’ll have plenty of time to explore this charming city and soak up the local atmosphere.

Day 3Cuzco – Chincheros – Huchuy Qosqo

Early morning, we will pick you up from your hotel and drive to Chinchero where we will visit the church, a typical market and an archeological site. We continue our journey to Tauqaq, a village located on the edge of Piuray Lagoon, where we will begin the trek. After a short briefing about the route, we will walk for 3 hours until we reach Tauqaq Pass (4,000m), where we will have views of Ausangate, Veronica, Pitusiray and Sahuasiray. From the pass we’ll descend to our campsite, located just before Huchuy Qosqo.

Day 4Huchuy Qosqo – Lamay – Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes

After breakfast we will visit Huchuy Qosqo, an imposing architectural Incan complex that includes a large open ceremonial centre.  We will have a panoramic view of the Sacred Valley and the Vilcanota River from here. After a guided tour of this site we will continue on our way to Lamay at 3000m where we take a private bus to Ollantaytambo. From here we will take the train to Aguas Calientes for an overnight stay in a hotel.

Day 5Tour of Machu Picchu, return to Cusco

Today, you will be given a guided tour of the Lost City of the Incas and then have time to explore the ancient ruins for yourself. There is an option to climb Huayna Picchu, the famous mountain behind the ruins.  In the afternoon, we will catch the train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo, where you will be met by our driver who will transfer you to your hotel in Cuzco.
