The most iconic African adventure is climbing Mount
Kilimanjaro – the highest peak on the continent and the highest freestanding
mountain in the world at 5,895m high. This mammoth volcano can be spotted from hundreds
of miles away on a clear day and it’s no wonder so many people want to climb to
the ‘roof of Africa’. The trek up Kilimanjaro will take you through lush
plantations and tropical rainforest, alpine desert and snow-covered glaciers. To
climb Kilimanjaro is to reach one of the highest seven summits in the world –
the highest mountain on each continent – and is a bucket-list adventure for
many.
In Africa, adventure trips will likely include the chance to
spot big game on a wildlife safari, and what better way to relax after an
exhilarating trek. A visit to the Serengeti National Park or the Ngorongoro
Crater in Tanzania where you can glimpse lions, elephants, giraffe,
buffalo, rhino and hippos is an excellent way to cover after a multi-day hike.
The radiant continent of Africa is the only place in the
world where you can spot gorillas in the wild. Visit Uganda or Rwanda to
trek with gorillas through the jungle and catch a glimpse of them at rest where
they are monitored by rangers to ensure their continued safety. While you’re in
Uganda, head to the Rwenzori mountains, or the ‘mountains of the moon’, for
another awesome multi-day trek in Africa that is miles off the beaten track.
The people in this gorgeous country are warm and welcoming and the chance to
find incredible plant and animal life before, during and after a hiking trip is
unbeatable.
Heading to the northern corner of Africa, the breathtaking
Atlas Mountains of Morocco rise from the Atlantic coast and sprawl east
across the country, forming a border between the vast Sahara Desert and the
lush foothills in the north. Influenced by its Berber and Arab roots, this
exotic country is warm, and the air carries the smell of spices. Visit the warrens
of the souks in Marrakech before trekking Mount Toubkal, the highest mountain
in northern Africa at 4,167m. For the more adventurous and experienced,
climbing Toubkal in winter is an added challenge but a totally different
experience to see this arid mountain range covered in snow and ice.
To the far east of Morocco, the Middle Eastern country of
Jordan sits at the crossroads of Europe, Africa and Asia. Here is a country
bursting with culture, ancient wonders and intriguing history. Whilst there are
few summits to trek in Jordan, the desert is an awesome place to explore, and
our trips offer a fully immersive experience. Sleep in Berber camps and see the
stars meet the horizon, discover the unique formations forged by sand as you
journey through the rich red sand and learn more about the nomadic people who
reside here still.
