When to go? Seasons, climate, festivities

  • October to February

    The summer time from October to February is the best time to visit Patagonia. November to January are the "hottest" months but the shoulder months of October and February tend to have less windy conditions.
  • April to November

    The best time to visit Northern Chile is from mid-April to the end of November, thus avoiding the humid heat and tropical summer rains.

Holidays and festivities

  • Fiestas Patrias

    September
    This commemorates the First Government Assembly which marked Chilean Independence on September 18th 1810. The festivities usually include dancing the Cueca, the national dance of Chile.
  • La Tirana

    June
    This festival pays tribute to the Virgen del Carmen through carnivals and dancing. The dancers wear elaborate costumes and masks and perform the Diablada, the “Dance of the Devils.”
  • Grape Harvest festival

    March to May
    During this festival a Grape Queen is chosen and teams of locals engage in a grape-stomping competition to see who can pulp the most juice out of 20 kg of fruit in 10 minutes.
  • Tapati

    February
    Tapati is a celebration of ancient culture and tradition held on Easter Island. The local people paint their bodies with mythical symbols and images and gather to recount the legends of their ancestors.
