There are three types of accommodation for safaris: Lodges, Permanent Camps and Mobile Camps. Lodges vary from large hotels, generally operated by one of the big hotel chains, like Sopa or Serena, and smaller independently run boutique lodges. We normally would always recommend the smaller more personal style of lodge but in Tanzania this doesn't always work out.

In the early days of development of the safari parks,  all the lodges were government built and controlled. The aesthetics of design were not high on the agenda during this period but these lodges did get first choice of locations. Hence, you have some rather ugly looking 60's style lodges built in the very best spots. And in some cases, when making recommendations, we feel that  location trumps the shortcomings of design.

Permanent camps are, as the name suggests, in fixed locations and offer tented accommodations on raised stone or decking platforms with en-suite bathrooms. Semi-permanent camps move two to three times a year following the migration. This is an expensive process and so semi-permanent camps are generally expensive and very high standard.

The second distinction on safari accommodation is "in-park" or "out-of-park" . Lodges and camps based inside National Parks are all more expensive than a similar standard of accommodation outside as the Park charge the lodges substantial fees. As a result, if you are happy to stay outside the park and travel in each day you can get good quality accommodation at very reasonable prices.  All of our "Budget" safaris use out of park lodges.

In terms of price, the range of safari lodges available is immense, from budget up to super, super luxury costing nearly £1000 per night. For each park we have chosen what we consider to be the best, sensibly priced options. To understand our recommendations though, you need to understand our own preferences.  First, we rate the view from the inside looking out as more important than the view from the outside looking in, so hotels with the best locations were preferred over beautifully designed lodges in poorer locations. Second, we rate friendliness of the staff more highly than quality of furnishings, so older lodges with great staff won out over new places that are a bit frosty. Finally we looked at value for money.

Our recommendations are below. We can though book any accommodation so if your choices would be different to ours and there are other lodges you would like to book please let us know.
